The article examines research conducted by UC Riverside's Department of Entomology on the potato psyllid, an insect that damages crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers. Researchers studied whether different populations of potato psyllids might actually represent three genetically distinct, closely related species. By collecting and analyzing the DNA of hundreds of psyllids across California, they discovered that these insects are strongly associated with different host plants. The researchers also found that some psyllids carry different variations of a bacterial pathogen that can cause diseases in crops, including zebra chip disease in potatoes. Overall, the research helps UCR scientists better understand insect diversity and develop improved strategies to protect agricultural crops from pests and plant diseases.
