Moths are important nighttime pollinators that help native plants reproduce and support healthy ecosystems. UC Riverside entomologist Erin Wilson-Rankin explains that moths also provide food for birds, bats, and other wildlife. Their populations are declining because of habitat loss, pesticides, and excessive outdoor lighting. The article encourages people to plant native flowers and reduce outdoor lighting to help protect moths and the ecosystems that depend on them.
